Recorded - February 1, 1966
Released - February 21, 1966
#1 for week of April 30, 1966.
Rock and Roll returns with a vengeance to this blog with a garage rockin' song by a very non-garage rock band. The Rascals, who in their early days were known as the "Young Rascals", hailed from New Jersey. Although they had released singles as early as 1965, it wasn't until 1966 that they had their first resounding hit.
Written by Rudy Clark and Arthur Resnick, Good Lovin' wasn't a brand new song. In fact, it had already been recorded by R&B singer Limmie Snell. After The Rascals began to cover the song in their live shows, they decided that the song should be their next single. This proved to be more than a good call as "Good Lovin'" made the group famous overnight.
The key emphasis of The Rascals' version of "Good Lovin'" is fun with a capital F! From the instantly effective "1,2,3, Good Lovin!" count in to the shouts and screams that occur at strategic points throughout the chorus, it is clear that this record is meant to get you up off your feet, or at least make you tap your toes. There are also call and response vocals throughout the entire song, which further adds to its singalong/party vibe.
Organ player and lead singer Felix Cavaliere remains the star of "Good Lovin'". Vocally, his blue eyed soul vocals are full of power and energy. Instrumentally, he absolutely cooks on the keyboard, especially that iconic solo section. The rest of the band provides a solid rhythm and guitar backdrop to this fiery keyboard playing.
The Rascals managed to avoid one hit wonder status by producing high quality material throughout the 1960's. In 1966 alone, they also recorded "You'd Better Run" and "I've Been Lonely Too Long". While neither of these songs reached the coveted #1 position, both are proof that The Rascals were more than meets the eye. When we get to 1967, I'll be reviewing another one of their classic songs, "Groovin'".
Final Verdict - "Good Lovin'" combines an adrenalin filled party atmosphere with excellent vocals and musicianship. If you are ever feeling tired or down, put this song on and I promise it will brighten your day!
Coming Up Next - "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & The Papas.
