Song #111 - "A World Without Love" - Peter And Gordon

#1 for week of June 27th, 1964.

Due to the overwhelming success that the Beatles endured starting from 1964, it would only be natural that other British groups would not only make their way overseas but also start having hits of their own. While Peter And Gordon aren't as remembered as other British Invasion bands from this time period, anyone who is fans of the early Beatles is sure to like "A World Without Love" as it was Paul McCartney himself who wrote it back in the late 1950's.

There were actually quite a few songs that Lennon/McCartney "Gave Away". This was often because they considered the song a throwaway or not suited for their ever evolving sound. With "A World Without Love" there is no way that it would have ever been recorded by The Beatles as reportedly, the rest of the band found the lyrics hilarious. So it would be only natural that Paul gave this song to his then-girlfriend Jane Asher's brother Peter and it was Peter and his singing partner Gordon Waller who recorded this song in January 1964 just at the edge of Beatlemania.

"A World Without Love" is a prime example of "Merseybeat", which is British rock/pop music originating from Liverpool England. This genre applies to the Beatles early albums, Gary And The Pacemakers, The Hollies, Freddie And The Dreamers, and of course, Peter And Gordon. The genre would gradually be phased out around 1964-5 as some of these groups changed their sound, and also as more blues-based British rock emerged such as The Rolling Stones.

Peter And Gordon certainly were talented in the vocal department. There is a strong folk influence in their voices and some tight two part harmonies. Musically the song sounds like it could have been recorded by The Beatles themselves. There is a steady drumbeat, thumping bass, and a duel guitar/organ solo. In terms of how the other Beatles felt about this song, I both agree and disagree. The song's lyrics certainly come from the more sugary side of Paul, but the theme contained within, love, is something that all four had always been happy to sing about and preach.

While Peter And Gordon would never again have an American #1 hit, they did chart at #7 with "I Go To Pieces" which was written by Del Shannon. So although the duo are more known for singing songs written by others, I can certainly say they makes these songs their own.

Final Verdict - An overall good arrangement of a song that otherwise would not have seen the light of day by its original composer. If this song has slipped by you over the years, go check it out and give it a spin!

Coming Up Next - "I Get Around" by The Beach Boys.

Until Next Time - I'm Dr. Rock, and I won't stay in a world without rock.
