Song #70 - "The Shirelles" - Soldier Boy

#1 for weeks of May 5, 12, and 19th, 1962.

When it comes to 1960's girl group songs, most people instantly think of wall of sound productions such as "Be My Baby" or "Da Doo Ron Ron". Both songs contain a massive amount of instrumentation, and this wall of sound technique was used liberally on many similar songs over the early 1960's. However, not all girl group songs have to be massive soundscapes. In fact, "Soldier Boy" by The Shirelles is much more minimalist and certainly has a unique sound to it.

Lyrically, the song deals with a girl who will still remain loyal to her boy who is on duty in the military  Due to the very laid back nature of the lyrics, which aren't just a bunch of sappy patriotism, ("Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree" anyone?), the song is very relatable to many people. In fact, I would say it is because the song doesn't shove these themes right in your face that it can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

Interestingly, we even have a guitar solo in this song. Granted, don't expect a blazing rock and roll solo as this one is much more laid back. Also, the saxophones add some extra flavor to the music. And that's about it, in terms of main instruments. Again, this song sounds much more minimalist and unique than other similar songs from the time period. You don't hear a hundred musical parts playing at once.

If I had to nitpick, I would mention that the Shirelles sing this song in unison as opposed to the lavish multi-part vocal stylings of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" or "Baby It's You". Because of this unison singing approach, the vocals can sound out of tune in places. However, sometimes these little vocal imperfections aren't so bad. It's certainly nicer than hearing would-be satisfactory vocals autotuned!

Final Verdict - While this may not be my favorite Shirelles song, I do appreciate it for sounding different and still holding up reasonably well today. Who knows, it just might be right up your alley.
